How can restaurants measure guest satisfaction with tip percentage?

By Axial Shift

Why surveys and reviews aren't enough

The industry spends a fortune measuring how happy guests are, yet only a few guests ever respond to a survey, a review request or a feedback form. Those few voices are rarely the whole dining room.

Why tip percentage works

  • Every guest who can tip makes a choice: whether to tip, and how much.
  • A single tip doesn't tell you much, because different people tip differently.
  • Averages over time do. Watch tip percentage across all guests, by server, shift and store, and the trend shows whether guests are getting happier.

How Axial uses it

  • Team members see their own tip percentage on their dashboard, next to their sales, check average and how they're doing in challenges.
  • Managers and above-store leaders see tip percentage by employee, shift and store, alongside guest review scores.
  • Goals and contests focus the whole team on making guests happier, and everyone above average wins, not just the top three.

What happens in about 90 days

In Axial installs where guests tip, we typically see the same pattern:

  • Before Axial, the lowest tip earner earns about 5.5 percentage points less than the top earner, measured as a percentage of sales.
  • Within about 90 days, that range compresses to 2 to 2.5 points.
  • The top earner's tip percentage rises by about a point too.

When the whole team focuses on making guests happier, employees make more money, guests come back more often, turnover drops, and the restaurant makes more money.
